The Future of Ukrainian Land in the Hands of Youth: Results of the Hackathon

Organized by the Department of Geodesy and Land Management of Sumy National Agrarian University, the hackathon “Ukrainian Scientific Community for Soil Quality in Ukraine” aimed to encourage students and staff from Ukrainian and EU universities to generate ideas and find solutions to address the problem of soil quality in areas affected by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Particular attention was paid to integrating citizen science using digital tools.

During the hackathon, teams composed of students from various specialties focused on solving complex problems. One team included students from the specialties of ecology, law, earth sciences, geodesy, and land management, allowing them to exchange experiences and knowledge.

The teams, including Sumy National Agrarian University students Vadym Doroshenko, Viktoria Tokar, Zakhar Alekseenko (speciality 193 Geodesy and Land Management), Oleksandr Liban, and Elizaveta Volkova (speciality 081 Law), presented their visions and proposals for restoring soil quality. Their creative ideas and desire for change made a significant contribution to the overall result of the event.

The event was organized by the Web2Learn team and linked to the DigiEduHack tasks developed within the GROMADA partnership “Addressing War Threats to Water Resources in Ukraine” and “Ukrainian Academic Community in the Legal Aspects of Citizen-Generated Data”.

The organizers of the event express sincere gratitude to all participants for their active participation and creativity. They also emphasize the importance of such initiatives for developing Ukraine’s scientific potential and addressing pressing environmental problems.
